BIRTHSTONE SERIES: SEPTEMBER'S SAPPHIRE This post is the next in a series of twelve discussing the creation and meaning of the different birthstones. The concept of birthstones dates to the Breastplate of Aaron described in the Bible. The breastplate was a ceremonial religious piece of armor set with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel and corresponding with the twelve months of the year.
The birthstone associated with September and the Virgo sign is the sapphire.
SAPPHIRE ORIGIN
Sapphire’s name comes from the Greek sappheiros, which used to refer to lapis lazuli. These days, the blue sapphire’s hue is the standard against which all other blue gems are compared. Interestingly, blue is the most popular color sapphire comes in, but it isn’t the only one. Sapphire also comes in yellow, pink, white, green, purple, orange, and black. Blue sapphire is typically the one that is being referred to whenever someone uses the word “sapphire” because it’s the most popular.
The gem is composed of the mineral corundum. Corundum is made from aluminum and oxygen. The mineral can turn blue when titanium is introduced.
SAPPHIRE MEANING
The sapphire has traditionally been a symbol of nobility, faithfulness, and truth. In Ancient Greece and Rome, the gem was thought to protect wearers from envy and harm. Also, in the Middle Ages in Europe, the clergy wore sapphires because there was thought to be a link between heaven and the gem. The gem is also said to have astrological ties and is thought to be imbued with mystical powers that can influence the wearer in different ways.
HOW TO WEAR SAPPHIRE
When deciding on other jewelry to wear with sapphire, it’s best to avoid mixing it with other gemstones. Instead, opt for gold or silver jewelry that will enhance the look of your gems without stealing any attention away from them. If you have blue eyes, sapphires will look great on you, especially when paired with a blue shirt or outfit. Don’t have blue eyes? No problem! Sapphires have such a strong hue that they can be worn by almost anyone wearing the right outfit. For example, if you really want to take advantage of the deep blue, you can wear the gems with gray-colored clothing in order to make the stones pop visually.
